How to use "open repeat"?

I do not get to understand the use of "open repeats". What is it good for? I just had a song that needed 4 repeats, the last one different from the three before.

How would I write three repeats, the last one different from the two before?

Please post an example chart to help better explain what you want to do. Do you mean just a section (or a few measures) of a song or the song form itself?
