R.I.P André George Previn, born Andreas Ludwig Priwin; April 6, 1929 – February 28, 2019) was a German-American pianist, conductor, and composer. Previn won four Academy Awards for his film work and ten Grammy Awards for his recordings (and one more for his Lifetime Achievement).

Previn's tour and recording of the Rachmaninoff symphonies with the LSO are unmatchable classics that defy improvement.

I was very young and I remember wearing out his trio album "King Size". That album was one of my first "primers".
 
Ah, yes. I remember hearing his jazz album of West Side Story when it came out around 1960.

I have to say, though, that I don't think jazz piano was his forte, at least not in that album.

He was virtuosic and his harmonies were inventive, but he relied on riffs, many of which were clichéd, and syncopated effects, rather than melodic invention, and he didn't really swing.
