Because many users have small-screen devices, it's best to only use the small font to make chords more readable in crowded measures. On shorter charts, there is usually no need to use measures of different lengths.
It is easiest when writing charts, to begin with one of the built-in templates, then delete the unused bar-lines at the bottom.
Charts are easier to read and follow when they are "square" and regular.
