Save Playback Settings with Song - safe from overwriting by import or other work

Can you PLEASE make iRealPro save all the playback settings -- style, key, tempo, instrument selection, relative volumes -- each time a song is saved?

And make it so these settings are not subject to being overwritten by whatever you do next in some other song?

Seriously, can you imagine what an inconvenience it would be if your word processor didn't save a document's settings when you saved the document? You work on a letter, save it in-progress and set it aside to work on a half-size booklet, come back to the letter and it's now 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 with different margins, and the text no longer fits. Would you accept a word processor that worked that way?

Well customizing a song's playback settings is no different. It sometimes takes me a lot of time to get the playback I want within iReal Pro's large selection of usually not exactly right options. I save my charts. Work on something else, with different settings and selections. I come back to the previous song, and its selections are now those from the last other thing I worked on.

I realize I need to start writing down my settings. But I shouldn't have to. iReal Pro should do it for me. Same as other software does.

If there's a way iReal Pro already does what I'm asking for, I would appreciate someone telling me what it is.

Thanks.

I don’t know of a hidden option in iRealPro that saves per-song settings, but one tip I’ve seen is to duplicate charts into “practice versions” with different configurations. It’s clunky, but at least you don’t lose your preferred setup entirely.

I’m confused, but I guess these other guys know what you’re talking about? My playback settings always stay the same unless I change them then they stay at the setting that I change them to I think what you want is to have several versions of the same song? Just duplicate the song and Write in the title what you’ve done differently.

I think the topic here, is having the possibility to save all settings (including instrument selection, mixer, count in, reverb, etc...) so when we back up and import the full library (that restores all default settings in the process), we don't have to set manually all those settings again.
I always use two devices: a phone for editing (because I have it with me all the time) and a tablet for reading on stage. In order to keep having the same library in both devices, I backup and import the full library once in a while. Doing so restore all settings to default.

Style, Key, and Tempo are saved for each song individually - and you can even have different settings for the same song in different playlists.

The mixer volumes, on the other hand, are global, meaning they affect all songs and all styles. This is because the vast majority of users mute one of the instruments (for example, bass if they’re a bass player, piano if they’re a pianist…) and never touch the mixer again. Or, if they play through their phone speakers, they might want to boost the bass for all songs.

If I made the mixer volumes individual for each song, they’d have to open the mixer for every song and mute their instrument - nope!

I could, in theory, add a global mute button for each instrument while keeping the volume sliders per-song, but that would create a confusing and frustrating experience for most users - and would probably lead to a flood of angry emails.

The instrument choices, however, are linked to each style. My thinking when I implemented this was that, for example, if you prefer a certain guitar sound for the Pop-Rock style, you’d likely want to hear that sound every time you select that style. Or if you’re a pianist, you might choose vibraphone for the Jazz Swing styles so you can play along without clashing sonically.

I understand that some power users like yourself enjoy tweaking the details of a backing track to an extreme level, but that’s probably beyond the scope of this app. The focus remains on simplicity and quickly getting to a solid backing track so you can spend your time practicing your instrument - and being ready when it’s time to play live, not in producing studio quality tracks that sound like the original recording.

Of course, I’m always open to adding new features, including more advanced options for those who want them. But I try to do so carefully, without compromising the simplicity and ease of use that make the app enjoyable for the vast majority of users - and in the case of this particular feature, I haven’t yet found a solution that satisfies both power users and regular users alike.
