Pres Returns - Lester Young

Lester Young was a tenor jazz saxophone legend gone too soon. Here is a chart of the blues in G he did with pianist Teddy Wilson, drummer Jo Jones and Gene Ramey on bass, including the changes for the great intro played by Teddy Wilson.

If you can look up the recording from his “Pres and Teddy” album- the changes are a simple blues in G with a few possible chord subs on the turnarounds, but Young and Wilson put on a clinic of what jazz blues are at their best. Young floats in, starts with elegantly simple phrases, lets it breathe with some space in between and then builds chorus after chorus.

Teddy Wilson dialogues with Young throughout with his skillful comping then takes 4 or so choruses before closing strong with Young bringing it home.

Sadly the album was released just a few months after Young’s untimely death in March of 1959. Listen to the recording, and learn from one of the best, and here is my chart of the changes.

Pres Returns (Teddy Wilson-Lester Young] - Lester Young

Here’s how I would write your chart.

Pres Returns 1 - Lester Young

I’d start with one of the built-in templates (like 48 bars).

Making a new chart

Suggesting alternative chords with text only works until the chart is transposed.
This works better

Thank you for sharing your chart

Thanks for the helpful editing suggestions, Bob. I looked at how to add alternate chords but haven’t figured out how to put them in on iPhone yet.

Also here is a link to the recording:

On iPhone tap the small button to the left of the chord box at the top of the Editor keyboard. Tap again to return to normal staff chords
