Jazz Practice Exercises

Hello Shaun.
Nice collection!
I want to bring your attention to two things:
- there is no "cycle of fourths". Our western music theory is built on fifths (too long to discuss here why - search for another reply of mine or pm me), and that's why it's called "cycle of fifths"; it has nothing to do with melodic movement of bass;
- the "doublex" songs have "ø7" written in as text, soothe player doesn't recognize that chord. Please use the picker chords for fail-safe behavior (and in a side note, remember that "ø" with no 7 is exactly the same).
Cheers.

what are "dropbacks"?

Hi,

Dropback is Harmony with LEGO bricks terminology for the common jazz move where VI7 is used to get from I to II-7. A larger common brick is what I call the 7-chord Dropback in my book: II V I VI II V I. We find it useful to have short names for the common harmonic moves that occur in jazz standards.

If you want to know more, see my website http://www.dropback.co.uk where my book, Insights In Jazz is for sale in ebook form. It is also available from Jazzwise.com as a printed book.

We also have a discussion group for the method on Google Groups.

I hope this helps

John

This is a great thread.
I did some of the bass exercises.
I have a question for Shaun's harmonic minor exercises.
Lociran #6 (Hm2) - Composer Shaun Johannes

Can you explain the (hm2)?
It looks to me like you'd play a D harmonic minor on the E-7b5.
That would be the 7th degree of the E scale. (hm7)

Also Jazz doesn't seem like the right place for this stuff.
