iREAL PRO in VirtualBox

Years ago, I tried running iREAL PRO in a VM under VirtualBox with Android-x86 4.4-r5 (KitKat-x86). It was a disaster.

Now that's no longer a problem. With android-x86_64-9.0-r2.iso in a VM under VirtualBox 7.0, it runs just as well as it does on my Samsung Tab A (2016).

I have a Fujitsu Esprimo P910 Core i5 with 8 GB RAM and a 1 TB Crucial MX500 SSD.

As mentioned, it runs smoothly under Linux Mint 22 Xfce. With the Cinnamon Edition, playback may be a bit choppy depending on the hardware - see below.

It also works well under Waydroid with Android 11 in Ubuntu 24.04 with GDM 3 as the display manager. Playback isn't entirely flawless, but acceptable – it sometimes stutters a bit. However, this shouldn't be a problem on a newer computer with 16 GB of RAM.

At first, I had difficulty selecting individual bars and bar ranges. However, this works well if you hold down the right mouse button on the bar, as you would do on a tablet, and then expand the bar range.

Input during editing is much better with the keyboard than on the tablet.

It should also run well on a Windows computer. VirtualBox should use significantly fewer resources than, for example, BlueStacks.

Conclusion: Today, you no longer need a physical Android device to work with iREAL PRO. It works better with a PC in a VM!

The ISO file can be downloaded here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/android-x86/files/Release 9.0/

I selected USB Tablet in the Pointing Device settings under System/Motherboard.

In Display/Screen, select VBoxSVGA as the graphics controller, otherwise it won't work.

I selected VBoxGuestAddions.iso as the optical drive image in Mass Storage/Controller:IDE to configure mouse pointer integration.

I hope this information can be helpful when setting up an Android VM.
