How to make last playback start from the bridge?

Often when playing a jazz standard with a vocalist, after the main melody is sung and the soloists do their thing over the form, the vocalist will come back in at the bridge and complete the form from there to end the song.

Can I do this type of thing in iRealPro? I can't figure out how to do a DS on the last time only.

Thanks!

Hi Vince

I understand what you are asking.

Most often for AABA songs, on the final repeat of the form after solos, the ensemble will play the main melody (head) over the final AA and the singer will come in for the BA to coda (if there's a "ending")

That being the case there's no need for a DS or any specific chart instruction.

At the top of the B section you could add text "vocals start here final time" for musician info but it’s not necessary.

If there's a specific song you would like to arrange (for example) IN AABA x6 BA Coda. For assistance, please post your chart here, specify the arrangement desired (using rehearsal marks as above).

Hi Bob! Thanks for the reply.

Yes I'm thinking of the last scenario. Say with a ballad like Misty. After the solos are done and we're at the end of the form it is better for expediency to simply "do a DS" and go back to the bridge instead of going all the way back and restating the AA part.

So are you saying that in iRealPro we would have to copy the BA section as a coda which would be played after all the normal repeats of the AABA form are completed? I can see that will work - that's a good approach. However, I was kind of hoping there was a way to do it without the duplication.

Vince,
The "shortcuts" DC, DS, endings etc. share a main purpose: to save ink. We use them to squeeeeeeze a long chart onto the iRp single page. Or...to make the chart easier for musicians to understand or easier to play.

When and how I apply shortcuts is driven by the context of the specific chart. As a rule of thumb, if something needs to happen the FINAL time, I’ll try to include it in the CODA. That may require some duplication (which I may condense to where it's hard to read) usually not a problem as it's written out fully previously.

We have to decide if we're trying to get the player-feature to follow the desired form or just providing info for live musicians.

So, for advise on a specific chart, post it with an explanation of what you would like. That way the chart in question can be loaded directly into the editor and played around with.

There often may be more than one way to obtain the circulation and form you want.
