Bass Improv Mastery (Lessons, Exercises, Mentoring) - Lorin Cohen

Solo on "Cantaloupe Island" like a Pro WITHOUT scales!

Here's a video outlining my approach to soloing on bass on "Cantaloupe Island". In the video, I show how I like to start with triads and arpeggios as opposed to scales.

Hi Lorin

Great content! Great use of the iRp app as well.

The way you used your sustaining keyboard to aid in exploring your suggested triad and arpeggio tones over the chord sound was very helpful.

The iRp app can do that as well.

Open the chart, select “Jazz-Long Notes” as the player style, set a LOOP by highlighting measures containing the chord to explore, touch the play icon in the first bar of the selected section. (Harder to explain than it is to do…) :)

Thank you for sharing your video

Agreed great content love the concept. Also when setting the loop, you can use Practice Mode and set the increased tempo to just one or two BPM and it will imperceptibly very slowly become faster as you master whatever. And of course, have your students start out slower than they want. I’m used to my students always saying , but I can play it better fast… Better and sloppier too.
