Roy Hargrove songs

As a trumpet player one of my major influences has been Roy Hargrove, but outside of standards you rarely see the chords or arrangements of his songs. I feel we should amend this, that being said, here are two of my favorite charts by Roy Hargrove.

Lada by Roy Hargrove

Strasbourg-St Denis by Roy Hargrove

More to come soon! Please post some of your own if you have any! :)

Hi everyone, I'm also a Roy's fan like Bullet. Recently I discover his "Starmaker", it's an amazing tune.
It's a very cool even8ths!
The structure is quite simple and quite "hipnotic" but i'm not so able to write down...
Anyone could help me????
Thanks in advance!

Hi Chettino,

Thanks for posting! I had completely forgotten about posting charts until I received the email telling me your request(so much for my "more to come soon" statement).
Anyways... Here are the transcribed chords to Lou Marini's "Starmaker" as played by the Roy Hargrove Quintet as well as another one of Roy's Compositions I found in my list of transcrptions.

Starmaker - Lou Marini

Roy Allan - Roy Hargrove

Let me know what you think and if you are looking for anything else.

R.I.P. Roy Anthony Hargrove

R.I.P. Roy Anthony Hargrove (October 16, 1969 – November 2, 2018) was an American jazz trumpeter. He won worldwide notice after winning two Grammy Awards for differing types of music, in 1997 and in 2002. Hargrove primarily played in the hard bop style for the majority of his albums, playing many jazz standards, espcially on his 1990's albums.

Arnob20,

Hi, welcome to the forum. Nice tune. If I could offer some tips for your chart ...

The suffixes 7+ and 7add13 are not standard in iReal Pro, so while they show on the chart, the chords won't play those suffixes. You can just use 7#5, or, as in the original, 7#9#5. And rather than 7add13 can you just use 13?

The text "Phrygian" can be eliminated if you notate the chord G7b9sus. You need vertical bar dividers before that chord and C#-7.

For clarity, line up all the sections flush left by moving the D section down a line and placing the second ending bar directly under the first ending bar. The G7 in the first ending will play for the whole bar unless you show with a slash that the first beat continues the D- from the previous bar.

You don't need "D.C. al Fine." The tune repeats in its entirety as many times as you specify and will automatically end after the last bar.

Here's my version with the above suggestions.

Mental Phrasing-Rev JE - Roy Hargrove

Cheers,
Jer
