IMHO the inserted 2/4 D-major can be eliminated. Instead, the repetition of the second part of the verse ends on D-major directly with a hard ritardando. That’s where Levon Helm inserts that wonderful drum roll…

I must revise my comment. The 2/2 measure with D major is actually OK.
Here is my version, matching the original recording from The Last Waltz, including the turnaround variants.
