Hi everybody.

I am a long time user of iReal Pro and I often use iReal Pro songs as backing tracks when recording in Logic Pro.

Last week, I uploaded an improvised guitar solo over rhythm changes video to YouTube using this process. This week's YouTube video video is a walkthrough demonstrating how I do this. I have also created a blog post walkthrough for those who prefer reading rather than watching. Hopefully the content will be helpful to other iReal Pro users and will expand your creative possibilities.

I use iReal pro for my teaching -- a drummer & long-notes bass line are very effective for helping beginner guitarists understand tempo, structure & steadiness.

Listening to a YouTube track while following an iRp chart that's an accurate transcription is helpful.
Finding a chart that actually matches a random youtube is a challenge.

Try this:

Search the forums for “source track” to find some excellent transcriptions of specific YouTube’s.

Then a couple of more difficult songs that work on the diminished scales (Whole Half Scale) and chords. The whole half scale in these two songs is:
C C# D# E F# G A A# C
Which to my ears, works throughout the whole song.

It was a fun experience because it lead to bizarre chords progressions rather quickly.

Burn-out

Music Students or new to iReal pro?

As you study the details and “rules” of musical form or find that iReal pro needs more attention to “structure” than you may be used to, it can be overwhelming and you may feel the onset of burnt-out.

You may even consider dropping out of music altogether.

If that should happen, take a breath, go back and listen to your favorite recordings, make music with your friends, do anything you can to remind yourself why
you loved music before you started studying it.

An education in music can be a very good thing, but it can also squeeze the life out of any love you ever had for it.

Don't let it.

I was wondering if anyone has utilized iReal b in teaching their students to improvise. I just got am iPad recently and looking to change to this program instead of band in a box. Just looking for feedback and advice

I just found Brian‘s augmented track.… Brilliant love it… As I play more clarinet, I can see why Artie Shaw had the whole tone scale as one of his principal things to work on. Not so easy. In Brian’s track there are a few places where it is not augmented. I’m not sure Brian did this on purpose or not…?… Also strongly recommend playing this with long tones. It sounds really cool and those major two chords sound really cool when they come up also, so they may be on purpose.?
I’m gonna play around with this chart make some tweaks for my own uses.

Yep........Just started recently using this with my Students and it's a fantastic tool for Education. Simple, Straightforward, and Very Functional.

Be sure you have a good sounding Bluetooth speaker with good base.… If you’re giving Bass lessons, you can turn off the Bass and Piano and guitar players could turn those off also… Be sure to utilize the loop function with your finger press and drag. Also the speed up section. The little man with the hat is good ….if it’s just a few bars, you can set it to one beat per minute increase, and it will be very gradual.
