I started out as a self-taught musician, teaching myself to play the harmonica when I was 11 as well as how to read music. I took up the piano at age 18, reaching about grade VIII standard by the time I was 21. Nowadays, I'm probably more like grade V standard, but with practice could easily attain a high level again.
At 24, I taught myself to play the flute and reached about grade V standard. A year later, I learned basic guitar while living with two guitarists in Melbourne, Australia.
At 26, I went back to uni (SOAS) to do a degree in Linguistics and Music, which I completed in 2004. In that time, I spent 3 years playing the mbira (Zimbabwean thumb piano).
In September 2012, I took up drumming - and now I'm in the second year of a drumming class. In July 2013, I took up the tenor saxophone - starting with two months of private tuition, followed by a year 2 course in saxophone at The City Literary Institute.
